Considering the sad reality that 80 percent of people are miserable at their jobs, it’s no surprise that so many people just “float” through their career with a lack of drive, motivation and fulfillment. The problem is that this rut starts forming “mental roadblocks” that stop so many of us from ever coming out of it.
I am sure a lot of us can relate to having no career guidance or direction from back in our high school days. I know I can, and that was my driving force to start my own career counselling businesses to stop others going through the negative thoughts, feelings and experiences that I went through.
In my previous interview with Matt Manero, he tells a similar story: having no career roadmap as an adolescent where he said he would scream for someone to take him under their wing and just show him the way. Matt tells us about his humble beginnings working as a chef, on starting multiple businesses that failed, to launching his current business, Commercial Fleet Financing in 1995 with nothing more than a folding table and a phone. Today he has four businesses generating over $150-million a year and is a three time Inc. Magazine winner for having one of the fastest growing companies in America.

Start Developing “The Grit” In Your Career
Grit is the ability to do anything legal to make it where you want to get to, but it all starts with getting clarity on who you are and where you want to be. “Grit is the determination to dig in deep, day in and day out, to achieve a meaningful benefit. It’s not just seeing the goal, but muscling up the commitment to stay with it no matter what obstacles come your way, and doing it over and over and over for a long time.”
Matt explained that Grit is that relentless drive and desire to do the uncomfortable and difficult things that are going to propel you forward in your career or business—like Getting up at 4am to head into the office early to smash out those projects in half the time, making 100 sales calls a day even when you don’t feel like it and taking on your manager’s biggest problems or projects and getting them done.
You Have to Connect Yourself to Your Organization’s Revenue Stream
Matt says, “Regardless of the position you are in, if your expense becomes greater than the value/revenue you bring to my organisation, you’ve got a problem.” Everyone should understand that they have a number over their head. Try to make sure you justify that number.
I have found this a lot when people are going for job interviews. They don’t realise that all an employer is looking for is a return on investment in hiring you or a huge value add to their organisation.
You Need to Be Selfish about Your Career
An amazing bit of advice that Matt always tells his team is, “You make the money you need to make, and the company will make the money we need to make.” People need to get selfish about this. The company needs to help you get ahead financially. Find opportunities in everything you do, learn the lessons from the good and the bad and seize them for yourself. “If The Company isn’t giving you what you need, you need to take your skills and find something that will.”
Don’t Be Afraid to Reach Out to People
This is some great advice from Matt, doing this has helped me a lot, especially with my show, the Career Breakthrough Series. “You can not get big without partnerships and trusting people around you, end of story.” It is impossible to scale a business or career without a strong network.
Matt’s biggest mistake was not dreaming big enough early on, as he said the opinions of others kept him playing small when he had unlimited potential.
