4 Self-Publishing Tips from Indie Author Kelechi Uchendu

Self-publishing within the literary industry is the process of writing, editing, designing, and distributing a book without the involvement of a publishing company.

The digital and self-publishing market has exhibited extensive growth within the past year, providing many opportunities for upcoming writers to get their foot into the door. As an emerging writer, you are likely intrigued by this option.

However, entering the intricate world of self-publishing as a beginner can be intimidating. Kelechi Uchendu, entrepreneur and author of Bully Friends, provided expert tips on navigating the self-publishing process following her recent success.

You have to spend money to make money.

If you choose the self-publishing route with your book, you will have to spend money out-of-pocket. However, a greater investment will result in a greater return. Kelechi suggests spending between $1000 and $4000 through your self-publishing process.

Depending on how much creative control you choose to take on, fees will be distributed to illustrators, editors, graphic designers, and a hybrid publishing company.

Find the right hybrid publishing service.

A hybrid publishing company uses elements of traditional publishing, but provides a slightly different model. Hybrid publishers offer conventional services such as editing, marketing, and distribution, but the author will be required to pay a fee.

Using this service will increase your chances of creating and selling a successful, professional product. Kelechi recommends using Emerald Publishing.

Print-on-demand is key.

If you do choose to work with a hybrid publishing company, make sure to do your research. If a hybrid publisher requires the author to buy a mass amount of their books at once, that is a major red flag.

“A reputable publisher will utilize the new technology for print on demand,” Uchendu said. In other words, when a customer orders a book, it will be printed on-site and sent directly to them.  You should not be buying your books to keep and sell.

Consumers should not be able to tell if your book is self-published.

As a self-published author, your goal is to sell a book that appears just as professional and credible as a traditionally published book. If you follow these steps, your customers won’t even know your book was self-published.

Due to the evolving digital age and booming popularity of self-publication, there is no better time to be a writer.
