To get ahead in life, risk-taking is essential. Whether it’s starting that business or asking that girl out, everything we do involves risk. Those who are better at absorbing risk, they’re the ones we admire. Life can become stale. This can lead to complacency. Sometimes, you need to do something different—something that people wouldn’t expect you to do.
I see risks as something amazing, and that is what I’m writing to share with you today.
1. Learn from People Who Are Good at Getting What They Want
If you want to achieve greatness in your life, remember that the eventual failure is inevitable. If you’re not failing, you’re not trying hard enough. Eventually, you’ll laugh at the failures you had. It’s as if your entire world is going downhill. But the sun will always come out. It may not come out full blast tomorrow, but it will shine.
By taking a risk, you either do what you set out to do, or else you gain knowledge that will let you succeed next time.
I knew nothing about marketing when starting my companies. But through trial and error, I became proficient.
I promise that everything will be okay when you take risks. The legendary Steve Jobs once said, “You can’t connect the dots looking forward, only backwards.”
2. Get Beyond Your Comfort Zone
The comfort zone is lovely, but nothing ever grows there. No one who has ever been great by staying within the means of their comfort zone.
How do you know you’re in your comfort zone? Your mind and body will encounter resistance against what you know you need to do.
You’ll tell yourself every excuse in the book. Be the one to talk back to yourself—don’t wait for someone else to do it. When you push past that point where you didn’t think was possible, your life will change.
Whether it’s running a marathon, moving to a new state, or starting a new diet, these are things that can be outside your comfort zone. When you tackle them one by one, well, that brings me to my next point.
3. Learn About Yourself
You made it. You got past your self-perceived limitations. Welcome to the land of exhilaration. These things you never thought you could do, you have overcome them. You picture yourself in a different light, gaining confidence with each step.
Understand that what your mind conceives, you can achieve.
I use to tell myself I could never run long-distance. Long story short, after a few months of training, I could run 10 miles straight without stopping. As people, we doubt our abilities, and I’m not sure why we do that. Break through barriers you’ve held onto you for so long. When you do, life just gets better.
You become happier and more fulfilled.
Never say the phrase ‘I can’t. Say, ‘I can do whatever it takes.’ It’s a constant battle between your conscious mind and subconscious. But when you take risks, you get outside your comfort zone and grow as an individual.
4. Anything is Possible
Over the course of your risk-taking life, you see that no goal is impossible. When you take risks and they work out, you gain confidence. Those at the top in their industry never let excuses dictate their lives. They understood that they will spend their entire life taking risks.
Everyone starts off with a dream. As we grow older, others tell us we can never achieve our aspirations. It’s not because they don’t love us, it’s because they’re afraid of what will happen when we go after what we want.
Taking no risk is the biggest risk.
If you take one point from this article, let it be this: you can achieve incredible success. Yes, it will be beyond your comfort zone, but it’s yours for the taking. I don’t care what others tell you, you can achieve enormous heights, but it starts with taking risks.
5. Risk Living Ordinary
Most people are content with their life. You aren’t one of them, you want more out of life. You can never achieve the life you want by playing it safe.
I’d rather spend thirty years taking risks every single day than have to spend one hundred years huddled up in the corner. Step up into greatness. Only take advice from those who you’re willing to trade places with. Seek those who have the life you want to live and you’ll realize that they didn’t get there by playing it safe.
I’d rather risk everything doing something I love than spend a minute doing something I hate.
