Colby Blackwell on Why He Thinks Fishing Is a Greats Means of Relaxing as well as Staying Fit

Fishing can either be a relaxing hobby or an extreme sport. And for athlete Colby Blackwell, it tends towards the latter. He is currently working to become one of the most trusted names in extreme fishing adventures online.

Blackwell is an influencer in the fishing space, and he is only 18 years old. He shares photos of the most exciting catches on his Instagram account, which has almost 30k followers. He also shares his experiences on his YouTube channel, where he has 1.7k followers, and his accounts are growing every single day. He shows unique elements of the fishing process on YouTube, from catching the fish to cooking it. One of his most unique videos is a Virutal Reality 360 degree Goliath Grouper catch and release. “I want to show people how fun fishing can be before they even get onto the boat,” Blackwell said. “Fishing is truly a sport if you want it to be, and I want more people to get into it.”

Blackwell specializes in kayak fishing. “The sport is intense. You need to be patient, technical, physically fit, and good at multitasking. There are so many things that have to happen on the kayak all at once, including paddling, balancing, steering, watching out for other boats, and, of course, fishing.” In 2019, he caught two world record-sized fish on a kayak off the coast of Panama. One was a massive 52’’ Cubera Snapper, while the other was a 50’’ Broomtail Grouper. “Off the coast of Panama is probably my favorite place to fish.

There’s a huge variety of species just waiting to be caught, and the weather conditions change quickly. I can’t wait to go back there and find more record-breaking fish.” Blackwell is also the first person to catch a Swordfish, Marlin, and Sailfish from a kayak. “Catching a new fish or a bigger fish is one of the best feelings in the world. I don’t even necessarily have to keep them to feel that sense of accomplishment. It’s mostly about the chase for me.” Blackwell has several deep-sea kayak fishing trips coming up this summer. “I can’t wait for the weather to get warm again so I can get back out there. It really is where I truly belong.”

If you’ve never tried kayak fishing before, Colby Blackwell recommends it. You can watch his videos or check out his Instagram to learn more about this exciting sport.
