Did you know that all fruits and vegetables aren’t necessarily good for you? Crazy right? After all this time, our moms may have been wrong.
I recently had the chance to sit down with Dr. Steven Gundry, famed heart surgeon and personal physician to Tony Robbins. He also has Usher, Peter Diamandis, and Alan Arkin on his roster of clients, so you know he’s legit and respected in his field.
The best part of talking with Dr. Gundry was finding out that he used to be one of the top surgeons in the US but came to a conclusion that he could save more lives by teaching people the proper foods to eat, rather than through surgery.
This is when he decided to change his medical direction, and started to heal patients from within.
The Future of Medicine
In recent years many studies have been done, uncovering common foods we choose to put in our bodies either heal us, or fuel things like cancer, diabetes, and auto-immune diseases.
I grew up an active kid playing high-level hockey my whole life but nutrition was always kind of an afterthought. It wasn’t until my third year of college where I started to take a closer look at my diet and the foods I was choosing to eat and put in my body.
After all, it’s college, who actually pays attention to what you eat when you’re a poor college student right? I know I sure didn’t.
Once I started to learn about the harmful ingredients in packaged foods like glucose and high-fructose corn syrup and the harmful chemicals being put on our fruits and vegetables, it made me rethink the choices I was making. To this day I don’t consider myself a nutrition expert, but I definitely know more about nutrition and exercise than the average person because I live the lifestyle, and constantly educate myself with recent study results.
The way that Dr. Gundry chose to tackle this problem was through opening his own clinics focusing on a patient’s diet, rather than prescribing medication to blanket their symptoms. This really is the future of medicine and Dr. Gundry explained to me why he thinks so after several studies and tests he’s done.
“In 1999 at 48 years old my patient Big Ed had inoperable heart disease and in a matter of 6 months lost 60 pounds. He was able to close out half of the blockages in his heart within 6 months by taking supplements and implementing a better diet that I didn’t prescribe. This is when I decided to leave traditional medicine.”
That story from Dr. Gundry about Big Ed was inspirational, to say the least, and since 1999 Gundry has been able to help tens of thousands of people around the world.
In Gundry’s latest book Plant Paradox, which happens to already be a New York Times Bestseller, he talks about the hidden dangers found in so-called healthy foods that cause disease and weight gain. My mind was blown when I heard some of the things Gundry told me when it came to foods that I thought were healthy for me to eat every day.
After listening to his theories, evidence, and then putting together my own logic I soon realized that he has a very compelling case for a lot of the food we choose to eat on a regular basis that isn’t necessarily healthy for us.
Removing Lectins from our Diets
Through Gundry’s research and studies, he was able to find a link between lectins and most of today’s health problems consisting of cancer, autoimmune diseases, and type 2 diabetes.
Lectins are a type of protein that binds to cell membranes. Without getting too sciency, lectins are also found in plants and act as a defense mechanism against microorganisms like insects.
A simple way to think of lectins is that all vegetables and fruits have lectins and they are released when we eat them. Essentially they know when we are eating them and they try to stop us from doing so. Crazy right?
So this probably has you thinking that there are probably some fruits or vegetables that all of us eat that could be causing our health problems or harming our bodies without us knowing.
Foods to Stay Away From
During my talk with Dr. Gundry, I wanted to find out what are some of the foods that all of us could eliminate from our diets as a starting point and he gave me three ideas I wanted to share with you.
1. Fruit
Stay away from fruit as it’s actually toxic to your body. Fruit has fructose in it which cancer cells thrive on. If you are having lots of fruit every day all year long, this is not good for your body.
The best way to eat fruit and the way our ancestors used to do it is to eat fruit only when it’s in season. This isn’t always easy to do when places like Costco and Whole Foods make fruit available all year round. But at least now you know.
2. Granola and Cereal
Two staples you could find in my house growing up that I used to eat all the time. Granola and cereal are basically just boxes of sugar after talking with Gundry. I knew this already but after listening to him and the harm this puts on our bodies, it’s safe to say you won’t be seeing me indulge in cereal anytime soon.
3. Milk Products
Not all milk products are made the same and not all of them are bad for you. Dr. Gundry advises his patients to stay away from milk products made from the wrong type of cows which you can read more about in his latest book Plant Paradox.
If you are going to have milk products he suggests you have yogurt or cheese from a sheep or goat rather than most North American cows.
Plant Paradox Explained
I know some of you reading this right now are thinking is this guy insane? Some may think he is when others think he’s a miracle worker. Dr. Gundry has helped cure Stage 3 & 4 cancer patients and many sufferers from autoimmune diseases through his rigorous meal plans and advice.
Like I tell everyone, no matter what information you read or hear about, take it all with a grain of salt. Not everything will work the same for everyone. All of us are made differently both genetically and physically but when Dr. Gundry boasts clients like Tony Robbins and Usher and has a clinic that has helped tens of thousands of patients eradicate their conditions, it’s worth taking note of what you are deciding to put into your body.
After all, if you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything. Food either heals you or harms you. I’m not a doctor myself but I can assure you that after talking with Dr. Gundry I will be implementing some of his suggestions into my daily routine.
