Jose’s Tips for Instagram Growth
1. Pick a Niche
Choosing a niche for your Instagram is absolutely essential to your success on the social media platform. Remember: there are quite literally millions of people on Instagram trying to achieve the same thing as you.
When deciding on a niche, it’s important to plan out where you can take it. If you decide that travel is your niche, what content will you specifically share? Maybe it could be budget traveling or eco traveling.
Try to match your niche with another niche subject within your chosen niche. This will help set you apart from the competition, allowing you to create and share unique content that people want to see.
Once you start sharing your niche content, people will associate you with that niche, allowing you to become an expert in that area and creating a name for yourself. Make sure you think long and hard about your niche, complete lots of research beforehand, and make sure nobody is already doing it.
2. Choose a ‘Catchy’ Instagram Handle
Your handle is essentially your business name and brand. It needs to catch people’s attention, allowing them to become familiar with it and spot it among the millions of other handles as they scroll through their Instagram feed.
For example, if you are a realtor, and your name is John Smith, you are better off by having something like @Smithrealty or @Johnrealty rather than @johnsmith in your handle. It will provide a quick yet immediate look at what your Instagram is about.
There are thousands of people out there with a similar name to yours, so make it interesting or even funny to help engage more people. Once people get to know you, they will want to search for you easily, so you want your handle to be easy to type and remember.
3. Be Specific on What You Want to Accomplish
The more specific you are, the clearer you will be and the better the chances of obtaining the results you want. Don’t just aim for “grow my following”; instead, strive for “by the end of January 2020, I will have 2,000 extra followers.” Then, plan and act accordingly.
As with any vision in life, it’s important to set these goals so you can start to aim for what you want to achieve. Never underestimate the power of a vision. With enough hard work and commitment, you can achieve anything.
Once you reach certain goals, be sure to celebrate them; let your followers know or even create a giveaway to mark the accomplishment. This will only further drive up your number of followers and increase engagement.
4. Do Your Market Research
Success and opportunities on Instagram are no different than in real life. The more prepared and knowledgeable you are of your topic, the more you will lead. The more you lead by example (being active, sharing value, posting great content) the more people will look up to and follow you. Of course, this is not easy or simple. This is why I mentioned in one of my last interviews that market research and/or hiring a mentor are CRUCIAL to your success. Interestingly enough, it applies to both IG and real life.
