How it is to actually work as a freelance writer

Lessons from someone who has been doing it for 20 years.

You might see a lot of people who are working from home these days – not just because of covid home offices, but because more and more remote jobs are becoming available.

Perhaps you’ve even tried home office yourself, and enjoy the increased flexibility it brings. Instead of spending 8 hours inside an office building, you can get your work done from the comfort of your home.

One of the main ways that people pick up freelance work, is through writing. Countless different writing projects exist out there, like text editing, translation, and content production. The opportunities are endless, and if you want to become a freelance writer yourself, I do have some lessons I think you would benefit from.

Opens up for interesting conversations and research

During the last 20 years, I have worked for Norway’s largest newspapers, interviewing lots of different people and businesses, and then writing content about them which is then published in the newspapers.

My work recently after going freelance and working “for my self”; has especially been honed in on talking to many Norwegian companies during covid times, to find out how they are dealing with the situation. I’ve spoken to electricians, chiropractors, dentists, and companies from lots of other industries.

What I’ve learned from all of these conversations, is that it’s incredibly rewarding to ask questions and get to learn more about people and their work. Another thing that makes freelance writing such a great job, is that I get to do a lot of research, which further enlightens me on the most important topics of the day.

Can provide flexibility in your schedule

This one, you’ve probably figured out for yourself. Working as a freelance writer means you can be anywhere you want, and still get the job done. You can sit in your favorite café, you can stay outside in your garden and enjoy the sun, or you can even lie in bed if you can be productive there as well.

It’s important to be structured

Up until now, we have only been looking at the benefits of being a freelance writer. But, as you might expect, there are natural costs for these blessings. One of them is that you need to be structured.

A lot of freelance jobs are based on deadlines. It’s up to you to set up the kind of schedule which will enable you to get it all done, not taking on too much work, and not letting distractions get in the way.

The nature of writing projects is also quite fluid; in most jobs, the best practices are always changing, which means that you will constantly have to reinvent yourself so that your skills remain relevant. This is perhaps the most important piece of advice I can give to you: don’t stop learning, there are always things you can do to get better.
