In the current economic environment where uncertainty and fear reign supreme, one industry that has been thriving is dentistry. And the reasons why are plentiful.

First of all, a dental procedure can be thousands of dollars cheaper than going through a more complicated surgery or treatment. Secondly, dental treatments have a high success rate and generally have little to no side effects. And thirdly, dentists offer patient-friendly hours such as evenings and weekends.

This has led to an increase in business for many firms that provide these treatments. And with that comes more opportunities for new patients who want to get their teeth fixed or replaced on any level of complexity they need it on: from crowns and implants to filling cavities and fixing chipped teeth.

Despite the positive state that many dental practices may currently experience, one can never know for sure when the next economic slump will appear. Dentists can’t allow themselves to rest on their laurels; like the professionals in any other industry, they need to keep renewing their practice to stay on top of the game in the long run.

In this post, I will share some of the top principles for running a successful dental practice in an uncertain environment, based on an interview I did with the Norwegian dental clinic Sentrum Tannlegesenter; a clinic from my own home country that has proven an uncanny ability to stay afloat and flourish during Covid times.

Principle 1 – Conducting Ongoing Research and Analysis to Stay Ahead of Trends

People who work in dental research need to know what the latest trends are in dentistry. They need to stay ahead of the curve and know what is going on in their field.

The role of a dentist is not only to provide treatment but also give advice on preventative care and healthy lifestyles. A dentist therefore needs to be aware of all these aspects to provide the most effective treatment.

Some people say that it doesn’t matter that much if you keep up with the latest trends. They say that if you perform your usual duties and check up on the teeth of your clients, then you’re all good. But in a progressively more uncertain world, thinking forward and going the extra mile for clients is one of the methods you can use to secure your position in the market, so that you won’t only be cleaning people’s teeth for another few years, but for many.

Principle 2 – Implementing Effective Marketing Strategies

The principle of marketing is to identify and satisfy customer needs. The dentist should be aware of the needs that their patients have and then find ways to fulfill them.

Marketing strategies for dental practices can take many forms:

  • advertisements,
  • social media posts, or
  • other avenues.

But the most popular way for dental clinics to become visible is through word-of-mouth marketing. A good dental clinic will make sure they provide excellent service and make the patient feel comfortable. This will ultimately lead to much more satisfied customers who will tell their friends about it which makes up for a much more effective form of marketing than just advertising.

Principle 3 – Maintaining the Facility’s Well-Being with an Effective Employee Management Strategy

As any manager knows, the well-being of customers will depend greatly on the well-being of employees. Therefore, the management team or CEO of a dental clinic would do well to develop a strategy for retaining and recruiting excellent and thriving dentists as well as staff members. This strategy may focus on the following:

  • creating a competitive salary and benefits package,
  • offering flexible scheduling,
  • providing opportunities for career growth, and
  • developing and implementing effective communication and training policies.

The Future of the Dental Industry is Uncertain but There are Ways You Can Adjust

The dental industry is a hugely competitive industry. Dentists are constantly seeking out new and innovative ways to better serve their patients. In the future, it will be essential for dentists to use creative thinking and technology in order to provide outstanding services and deliver results that their patients want.

In conclusion, there are many uncertainties about the future of the dental industry, but there are ways you can adjust in order to best prepare yourself if you have not already started.
