What Does It Mean to Be an Entrepreneur?

Entrepreneurship has become a trendy term in the last few years. Everyone seems to be calling themselves an entrepreneur. But, what does it really mean to be an entrepreneur?

If you are an entrepreneur, want to be an entrepreneur, or are looking to understand a friend who is an entrepreneur, I’m going to highlight the reasons entrepreneurs are necessary in the world today, and the role we play in society.

What Is the Role of an Entrepreneur?

Let’s look at people we all know who are successful entrepreneurs: Elon Musk, Richard Branson, Arianna Huffington, Oprah. What are they doing? Why have they made such an impact on society? Why do people look up to them? It’s because entrepreneurs are here to be innovative, to help our species grow and evolve. And they have all accomplished that.

Entrepreneurs Are Innovators

In the past, we looked to our government structures to provide the solutions to our world’s biggest problems. We expected our government to take care of our world, to protect our human rights, our environment, our economy. But in the last few years, this hasn’t been the case as many of the issues which need regulation are actually being less regulated.

Ask yourself this: How is my entrepreneurial innovation contributing to the evolution of the human species on our planet?

Entrepreneurs Are Visionaries

When you’re first starting your business, you have a lot of execution responsibilities. But if you stay in that role of execution and fail to step into the higher-level role of a visionary, your business isn’t going to make the impact you want it to make in the world. Entrepreneurs need to see the big picture, and it is our job to hold that vision.

Ask yourself this: Are you operating as a visionary in your business, or are you caught in the hamster wheel of daily task execution?

Entrepreneurs Are Leaders

When you are an entrepreneur, there is no path ahead of you. You must forge it yourself. It is up to you to lead the way and build a pathway where there was not one previously. You must be the innovator and the visionary of your business and that begins by embracing your role as a leader.

As yourself this: Am I actively leading my business to the innovative vision I see in my mind, or am I trying to walk a path someone else has forged?

Entrepreneurs have risen up to fill in the gaps. We want our oceans cleaned, so we do it ourselves. We want emissions to be cut, so we develop technology for individuals to change their usage. We want better access to prescriptions, so we develop an alternative to pharmacies. We want easier transportation, so we develop ride-sharing.

We are the innovators, the visionaries and the leaders in our communities, societies and the world at large. I want to hear how you are doing this in your business.
