The Catholic faith has undergone a significant transformation during the past few decades. Even though Catholicism has changed significantly, its core tenets remain the same. Throughout the centuries, religion has been a bastion of hope and a beacon of righteousness for countless people worldwide. It is up to the world’s religious leaders to interpret the words of the sacred texts and make sure that their followers are placed in a solid position to follow them. That is not a duty that George Rutler has taken lightly. He is one of the most respected and beloved advocates of the Catholic faith. He understands that Catholicism has gone through many changes, and for it to remain relevant, it has to be able to speak to the younger generation.
A Treasured Icon of the Catholic Faith
Father Rutler was born in 1945. He was raised in the Episcopal tradition in both New Jersey and New York. He served as an Episcopal priest for nine years. He was also the youngest Episcopal rector in the country when he led the Church of Good Shepherd in Rosemont, Pennsylvania. He joined the Catholic Church in 1979.
George Rutler was ordained to the diaconate in Rome. It was an honor that he enjoyed back in 1980. His Eminence William Cardinal Baum welcomed him to the priesthood in New York at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in 1981. During that time, he served as associate pastor of St. Joseph in Bronxville. He also shared sermons at Our Lady of Victory in the city’s Wall Street region along with St. Agnes, located in Manhattan. In addition to all of these duties, he served as a university chaplain for the Archdiocese. He was also a chaplain at the local General Hospital and spent time helping patients at the local Psychiatric Hospital. Furthermore, he also served more than a decade as the National Chaplain of Legatus, an organization designed to aid Catholic business leaders and their families.
Father Rutler has not taken his duty as a servant of the Lord lately. He has also served as a board member on several schools and colleges, trying to make the world a better place. Since 1988, he has hosted a weekly television program that has been broadcast all over the world. It continues to travel and provide lectures and host retreats in countless countries on various continents. Cardinal Dolan even appointed him pastor of the church of Saint Michael the Archangel back in 2013.
He Continues to Share His Knowledge with Others
In addition to his duties as a Catholic priest and leader of the faith, he has also made countless documentary films in the United States and England. He regularly contributes to numerous journals on the Catholic faith and has published close to 30 books on cultural issues, Theology, and history. He even wrote one book on sports.
He believes that the Catholic faith is still relevant even in the modern era. He understands that the faith has been through some difficult times during the past few years. He understands that the faith may need to be modernized to continue attracting the younger generation. He believes that Catholicism is something that everyone can benefit from. Therefore, he continues to travel the world and share his faith.
In 1988, the University of Oxford in England awarded him a degree as a Master of Studies. He was a regular preacher to the student body and townspeople of Oxford for several years. In 1996, Governor George W. Bush even made him an honorary Texan.
On September 11th, 2001 took place. He assisted at the World Trade Center. He was honored by the city council of New York and was even made an honorary firefighter by Dallas’s city.
Even in his advanced age, he has not wavered in his faith or dedication to it. He knows that people still turn to religion during times of crisis. That is why he always makes himself available for those in need.
Looking to the Future of Father George Rutler
Without a doubt, there are a lot of crises taking place in the world today. George Rutler understands that religion will play a central role in helping the world come out of all of these issues intact. Therefore, he continues to share his faith with other people. Even though he isn’t exactly sure what the future will hold for the planet, he knows that religion will play a significant role in the outcome. Therefore, he uses his experience, wisdom, and knowledge as a force for good. It will be interesting to see what happens next for Father Rutler.
