Pat Mazza: New Year’s Resolutions Are Nothing but Good Intentions, You Must Have a Vision and a Purpose

I’m a big, big believer in the power of New Year’s Resolutions. It is one of the most magical times of the year when we are filled with the joy of the post-festive season. However, I think that January 1st is a terrible time to make those resolutions.

Why is January 1st a terrible time to make a resolution? You have just had some time off work, you are relaxed, you have spent an unusually large amount of time with your family and, frankly, you are emerging from an unrealistic situation.

The festive period isn’t a normal time for anyone… so why would it be a good time to make a new plan for life? It’s not… but that doesn’t mean that resolutions are a bad thing.

Pat Mazza’s Thoughts on New Year’s Resolutions

Pat, says, “Happy New Year’s everyone! Research shows that 80% of people give up on their New Years Resolution by the 2nd week of February! The reason? What most people call ‘resolutions’ are really just desires or fun things they wish would happen. The majority of people aren’t actually resolving anything within themselves.”

Since you aren’t focusing on treating your problem at the roots, any changes you make are only ever going to be a temporary measure. Planning those changes out on the 1st day of a brand new year is part of that ethos.

What Sort of People Keep their Resolutions?

The kind of people that stick to their resolutions – New Year’s Day or otherwise – are those who have a deeper understanding of why they are doing it. Pat Mazza says that there needs to be a larger motivation underpinning the need to succeed.

For example, those who want to quit smoking because they feel like they should, are less likely to successfully quit than those who have a negative health diagnosis spurring them on to success. This pattern is repeated across a wide range of New Year’s Resolutions and continues, for most of us, year after year.

How to Stick to your New Year’s Resolution?

According to Pat, there is only one way that you will stick to those resolutions, and that’s to set them clear and firm in your mind. You need to decide which actions you are going to need to take every day, to make those goals a reality. Treat your New Year’s Resolutions like SMART goals and you will be well on your way to success.

If you start today and genuinely commit to the process, you will be guaranteed that this time next year, you will be looking back at a string of accomplishments. Mastering your New Year’s Resolutions could be the driving force behind you living the life that you have always dreamed of.

Taking baby steps towards your overall goal every day allows you to make quantitive progress towards the things you want to achieve in life. Apply this method to anything, at any time, and you can set resolutions to be proud of, whenever you please.

Our New Year’s Resolutions a bad thing? No. Just don’t make them on New Year, that’s all.
